ABOUT THE FOUNDATION...

The Educating Children Foundation has been formed and is operated in Costa Rica by John Hawker, an Englishman who has been living in San Jose, Costa Rica since 2002.

John grew up in Cornwall, England and when he was a child experienced the great difficulties of growing up in very poor circumstances. Due however to the financial sacrifice of his mother Gladys he was able to receive an excellent education.

OUR MISSION ...

Costa Rica is a third world country, situated in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama. It has a high level of poverty and it has a high dropout of children from school as the parents take them out at an early age from school to help support the family.

The foundation has built a school in a very poor area of San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica. The school is called the Lady Gladys in honour of Gladys, mother of the founder of Educating Children (pictured left with her husband Donald Mitchell) to provide a good basic education to children and adolescents who for reasons of poverty and their environment are currently not able to receive an adequate education.

A very important aspect of the work of the Foundation is to educate the parents about the importance of their children obtaining a good education. In many cases, these parents are illiterate and have no understanding of the value of education.

The greatest gift that you can give to any child and especially a poor child  is a good education.

This painting of Gladys, which was presented to John Hawker at the opening of The Lady Gladys Education Centre sits proudly in the office of the Educating Children Foundation
